InsectERA - The ERA of the insect industry
Objectives and main results
Consortium: The Agenda Mobilizadora InsectERA consortium will be led by the company Ingredient Odyssey, SA and comprises a total of 38 entities, including 17 Portuguese industrial and service companies (including 3 insect manufacturers), 17 Non-Business Entities from the Research and Development System (including 4 Collaborative Laboratories - CoLabs), 1 public administration entity, 3 Industrial Associations and a Scientific Society.
The InsectERA Agenda, financed by the European Union – Next Generation EU through Plano de Resiliência e Recuperação de Portugal (https://recuperarportugal.gov.pt/), aims to enable the industrialization and commercialization of innovative products based on insects, both in the food area (animal and human food), as well as in other industries (cosmetics or bioplastics) and in the innovative sector of bioremediation. InsectERA aims to foster the circular economy and promote the development of new products, processes and services, based on R&D and innovation, with high added value and incorporation of knowledge and technology, allowing to respond to the challenge of the green transition towards environmental sustainability. The Agenda covers the entire innovation cycle, from R&D to the manufacture and commercialization of products, supported by technologically advanced production. The Agenda is structured in 4 main vertical axes and 3 transversal axes to all vertical axes. The InFood vertical axis, led by Thunder Foods, has a minimum target of 15 new insect-based food product lines. The InFeed vertical axis, led by FeedInov, and of which CIIMAR is a partner, aims to create at least 8 new feeds for animal feed. The vertical axis InIndustry, led by IST, aims to develop and industrialize 4 new raw materials (chitosan, insect oil, lauric acid and natural insect extracts) and 9 new innovative final products. The vertical axis InBiorremediation, led by INIAV, aims to invest in R&D and create a research centre. The InFlass transverse axis, led by CoLab InPP, will evaluate the production of organic fertilizers generated by insects used in the vertical axes, allowing the generation of new product lines. The impacts on the human, animal, and environmental health of the products generated in the vertical axes will be assessed within the OneHealth transversal axis, led by EM, and with the collaboration of CIIMAR. Through the transversal axis In2Market, led by P-Bio, InsectERA will conduct a broad study of all sectors as a way to ensure the transference of new products to the market, namely at the legal level, at the consumer level, life cycle assessment, dissemination and training of human resources.
