Innovation and valorization of seafood products: meeting local challenges and opportunities
Objectives and main results
CIIMAR has embraced a new challenging project, the INNOVMAR - Innovation and Sustainability in the Management and Exploitation of Marine Resources is the new integrated project funded by the Northern Regional Operational Programme (NORTE2020) through the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The INSEAFOOD - Innovation and valorization of seafood products: meeting local challenges and opportunities - is one of the main research lines integrated in this structured project.
The main goal of INSEAFOOD is to potentiate CIIMAR scientific competences in the area of Aquaculture and Seafood Quality, that are relevant for the implementation of the North Portugal Strategy for Smart Specialization. The aim of this research line is to generate high quality scientific knowledge and innovation, through the production of added value sea food items leading to more sustainable and better performing food chains. INSEAFOOD involves an exceptional team of CIIMAR researchers complemented with the inclusion of new scientific posts, young researchers and doctoral students that will reinforce the capacity to compete in the aquaculture and seafood quality research areas. Research effort will be focused on economically important and well established shellfish (Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas) and finfish species (European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax) that play a major role in the Portuguese aquaculture sector. The project will also focus on the monitoring of marine algae and European sea urchin (Paracentrotus lividus) populations from the north sea coast of Portugal. Finally, an assessment of the economic potential of high quality sea urchin roe produced under captivity through dietary modulation will be performed.
It was released the first INSEAFOOD project e-Newsletter, which summarizes part of the research work developed in the first 12 month of project (01/01/2016 to 31/12/2016). The INSEAFOOD e-Newsletter will be published at months 18, 24 and 32 and will provide information on project progress, scientific publications, participation on events, project meetings and organized events and news dissemination.
